韩裔男演员隆大介本来在影片中有一段客串戏份，但是他在去往台湾的飞机上醉酒**的丑闻，导致被剧组开除 。马丁·斯科塞斯和编剧杰伊·考克斯早在1990年代就完成了《沉默》的第一版改编剧本。
